DOUBLE PODIUM AS WALKER IMPRESSES ON DEBUT

Sunday 27th March 2011

British racing driver Alex Walker made a perfect start to his car racing career in the InterSteps Championship at Silverstone yesterday, securing two P2 finishes and notching up 54 points for his first season's campaign.

Starting from 3rd on the grid for Race 1, the 16-year-old from Oldham dropped back to P5 when he got wheelspin coming off the line, leaving Fortec Motorsport team mate, Jake Dennis, to pull away and establish a lead.

Walker managed to claw his way back and slotted into P2, ahead of Patryk Szczerbinski, by lap 5, then pulled away, but Dennis already had the race under control and had extended his lead to over 10 seconds. For the remainder of the 25-minute race Walker set consistently fast times, making a dent in Dennis' lead and taking the flag after 12 laps, earning himself a well deserved P2 on his car racing debut.

In Race 2 Walker got off the line well and held on to 2nd position as the field came into Copse. Eventual race winner Dennis once again had a clear track in front of him and was able to pull away in the lead as Walker battled with James Peace for P2.

Rapidly pulling away from Peace, Walker drove faultlessly for the rest of the race and collected another piece of silverware to take home, and was delighted with the way his debut had unfolded.

Alex Walker:
"It's been a steep learning curve and a challenging weekend but I've enjoyed every moment of it. The car felt slightly better in the first race than the second, and the team have done a fantastic job and have been great to work with.

"I got too much wheelspin off the line in Race 1 so I lost a few places but it was a lot of fun battling to get them back and I'm delighted with 2nd.

"We achieved everything we set out to do this weekend but we need to work on closing the gap between myself and Jake (Dennis). Hopefully I can get some more track time in the car and come back even stronger at Snetterton."

The InterSteps Championship returns for Rounds 3, 4 and 5, with a triple-header at Snetterton in six weeks on May 7/8.
