ALEX WALKER CRUISES TO TWO WINS OUT OF THREE

Tuesday 5th July 2011

Oldham's Alex Walker put a clear message out to his championship rivals as the InterSteps Championship paid a visit to Rockingham, Northamptonshire with a triple-header last weekend.

After qualifying in P2 for Saturday's Race 1, just 0.0001sec behind pole-sitter James Peace, the 16-year-old was unfortunately unable to make the start of Race 1 due to a gearbox issue on the warm-up lap.

With the team working tirelessly through the night, taking delivery of parts from London and the Fortec Motorsport team base in Daventry, Walker gave his fortunes the perfect response by cruising to a lights-to-flag victory from pole position in Race 2, finishing ahead of team mate Ed Jones by nearly seven seconds, and taking fastest lap along the way by 0.4sec.

Walker more than matched his efforts in Race 3 and was once again able to drive into the distance, having started on pole, and built up an 8.9sec lead over Jones, setting the fastest lap of the race by the end of the 16 laps in the process.

Alex Walker:
"Today was a perfect way to put the disappointment of Race 1 behind me, with two convincing wins and two fastest laps, and I felt really confident going in to this weekend as I knew I was fully prepared both physically and mentally.

"Two pole positions in qualifying showed that we had the pace early on in the weekend. Unfortunately we had a problem in the gearbox in Race 1 so I couldn't make the start but this is motorsport and it wasn't anybody's fault, but the Fortec guys did a fantastic job, working all night to get the car ready for today. I'm just glad I could repay them for their hard work with two wins and pull back some points in the championship, but we can't take anything for granted and get carried away.

"Donington is only two weeks away so I will be doing everything I can in the meantime to build on today's performance and carry on the progress for the rest of the season."

Walker has now closed the gap on the championship leader to just two points as the calendar takes him to Donington, supporting the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC), on 16-17 July.
